YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — A Canadian crypto moderator fled his home with his family following an attempted kidnapping linked to Bitcoin. Moving between Airbnbs, he claims authorities could not ensure their safety. Reports indicate attackers believed he held significant Bitcoin wealth.

On another occasion, the vehicle swerved on the road, forcing him to stop. One suspect allegedly pulled a gun, prompting him to defend himself using pepper spray.
Attackers Believed Victim Owned 2.5 Million BTC
The criminals targeted the Canadian crypto moderator after Facebook posts falsely claimed he held 2.5 million BTC. In reality, he stated his holdings are worth only $10,000.
Police arrested four suspects, charging two with abduction plotting and illegal firearm possession. However, both suspects were released on bail and placed under house arrest until their trial in March 2025. The victim suspects organized crime involvement, further escalating his fears.
Torture Equipment Found During Attack
The victim told Quebec newspaper La Presse that the attackers had torture tools, including a tarpaulin with claws designed to inflict harm. He believed they intended to torture him and his children to obtain Bitcoin access. The psychological toll led him to relocate multiple times for safety.
Canada’s Rising Crypto Crime Problem
Incidents involving cryptocurrency-related crimes are increasing in Canada. According to Jameson Lopp, co-founder of Casa, there have been over 100 physical attacks on Bitcoin holders in recent years.
